Are Scorpions In Austin As Dangerous As They Look?
Austin is home to a variety of unique creatures, and one of the most unique in our area is the scorpion. This hard-shelled arachnid loves our arid climate and will, on occasion, come and visit us inside our homes when exterior conditions become unfavorable to their health. The question is, are these pests as dangerous as they look, and if so, what should you be doing to stop them. To keep scorpions off your Austin property, here are a few things we recommend you do.
What Are Scorpions?
Scorpions are arachnids that fall under the order of Scorpions. A close cousin to the spider, this pest hosts a pair of pincers, eight legs, and a long segmented tail with a stinger at its end. Here in Austin, we have two different scorpion species, the striped bark scorpion and the Texas cave scorpion. The striped bark scorpion is approximately 70 mm long and has a pale-yellow body with two dark, longitudinal stripes that run down its carapace. You can identify a Texas cave scorpion by its dark-colored body and thicker pincers. Of these two pests, the striped bark scorpion is much more common around homes.
Why Scorpions Invade Homes
Scorpions prefer to live outside. It is when conditions become unfavorable that these pests look to find shelter indoors. For scorpions, unfavorable conditions include cold weather, severe rainstorms, tornadoes, construction, and anything else that disturbs their natural environment.
Another reason scorpions invade homes is to hunt for insects and spiders. If scorpions are hunting for food on your property and see their meal buzz or crawl into your home, they might try to follow it inside.
Problems Scorpions Cause
There are thousands of species of scorpions around the world; roughly 50 are dangerous. As for the two species of scorpions in our area, both have venom and can sting, but neither poses any life-threatening risk to humans. That said, it is still incredibly unpleasant to be stung by one of these pests, especially if you are allergic to their venom. If you are unsure if you are allergic to scorpion venom, talk to your doctor. They will help you find out if you are at risk.
How To Prevent Scorpions
Scorpions find their way into homes in the same ways many other pests do. To keep these annoying stingers outside, here are a few prevention tips we recommend:
- Eliminate debris and get rid of clutter off your property.
- Organize storage areas in and around your home.
- Store firewood and lumber at least 30 feet away from your home.
- Use a caulking gun to fill in holes, gaps, and cracks in your exterior foundation and around window and door frames.
- Repair damage to siding, weatherstripping, door sweeps, and window and door screens.
- Make sure all of your windows and door are fitted properly and in good repair.
- Fix leaky water pipes and fixtures around your home.
- Inspect your gutters and make sure they are working properly.
- Keep your home as clean as possible.
